The YMCA of Singapore strengthens the special needs community through employment, vocational training and its various Special Needs Programmes. We advocate recognising the potentials and capabilities of the special needs community and seeing abilities beyond disabilities. Currently, staff with diverse special needs are employed and provided vocational training at YMCA @ One Orchard, a social enterprise that runs café and guestrooms.
We also aim to encourage holistic development of persons with special needs through various programmes that strengthen their independence, confidence and self-esteem. The Y Camp Challenge is a signature programme that engages them in outdoor adventure activities and encourages them to reach beyond themselves. The Y Arts Challenge provides a platform to hone their skills in visual and performing arts.
As part of the Y Camp Challenge, the annual YMCA Inclusive Climb brings together special needs individuals, corporate partners and volunteers on a mission to summit Mt Fuji. The climb serves as an inspiration and advocates for the special needs community while raising funds to sustain the YMCA’s Special Needs Programmes.
The YMCA of Singapore was awarded the Enabling Employer Award from SG Enable in 2019.
